As we celebrate our 10th birthday, we are eternally grateful and humbled to have been the given the opportunity to positively impact in a small way the future of a great continent. What started as a hope to give a helping hand to one deserving and talented student by our founder Rick Reeder, has grown beyond our dreams.

Three alumni are now back on the continent, starting the next phase of their journey and each paying it forward in their unique way to create an Africa that can reach its full potential. We have three more here at UT (Austin, TX) and OSU (Stillwater, OK) – honing their leadership skills along with the essential academic qualifications that can propel them to their future.

We are a small group of nobodies who have taken to heart Margaret Mead’s words: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” With that firmly planted in our mind, we are committing to making an even bigger impact to the continent by expanding our vision beyond our current strategy of bringing talented students to the United States.

While bringing students to the United States remains as a core of our strategy, we have realized that it limits our potential to realize the vision of championing the next generation of African leaders.

     • While developing, mentoring and supporting six students is nothing to be ashamed of, it only makes a small dent to the ever-growing need of capable leaders in Africa.

     • The time it takes to realize the donor impact – from bringing a student here to their returning to Africa to make a difference – is long. Along with fact that education in the United States is an investment-heavy venture, makes it challenging to create a compelling story to donors.

As we step into the next decade, we have even bigger aspirations to champion leaders and expand our presence in the continent. With that in mind, in 2017, we are expanding our strategy to sponsoring students in Africa who need a helping hand in learning essential skills to find a job that could set them up on a path of success. In addition, we will also look at selectively choosing and sponsoring African students who are already here at UT or OSU and need that last bit of help to graduate.

Our reasoning behind this ambitious expansion is to serve and develop more leaders with the limited resources we generate and to establish a presence in the continent. We hope this helps us to reach more at the point of need and results in faster realization of our vision. Our values and philosophy and vision steadfastly remains the same, and in fact demanded that we diversify.

The challenge remains the same, if not even more and that is raising the capital needed to serve these well deserving ever expanding African youth. We must reach newer like-minded donors and even go beyond our borders to Africa and those who have the means to contribute to the betterment of their own future. We are also stepping beyond our comfort zone of Austin and Stillwater to being present few thousand miles away.

Hopefully the end of our second decade will find us with even more gratitude and humility, and maybe a little bit dazed, at how this diversification strategy has grown beyond our dreams. We hope that you will join us and bring along more of your like-minded friends and family on this incredible journey!
